Some photo sessions are less about posing for the camera and more about simply enjoying an afternoon together.
For this maternity photoshoot at Congress Park in Saratoga, NY, that was exactly the idea.
We wanted to create an outdoor session that felt relaxed and natural, using the beautiful surroundings, natural light, and colors of Congress Park while giving the family space to interact, play, walk, laugh, and simply be themselves.

Maternity Photography That Feels Like Your Family
Pregnancy is such an important chapter in a family’s story, and maternity photos do not necessarily have to feel formal or overly posed.
For this session, the goal was to document the anticipation of welcoming a new baby while also celebrating the family exactly as they are right now.
Their daughter was able to explore, interact with her parents, and become part of the experience instead of being asked to constantly stop and pose for the camera.
That freedom created some of my favorite photographs from the afternoon: genuine expressions, spontaneous interactions, and those little in-between moments that often become the images families treasure most.

Why Congress Park Is Beautiful for Family Photos
Located in the heart of Saratoga Springs, NY, Congress Park offers a beautiful variety of backgrounds for outdoor photography.
The greenery, pathways, flowers, architecture, and open spaces make it possible to create very different photographs while allowing the session to flow naturally.
For a family photoshoot, that variety is especially valuable. Instead of staying in one spot and repeatedly recreating poses, we can move through the park naturally, giving children room to explore and families an opportunity to interact.
The result feels much more like spending an afternoon together with photographs happening along the way.
Natural Light, Movement, and Candid Photos
My approach to outdoor photography is to create enough direction for everyone to feel comfortable without making every photograph feel staged.
Sometimes that means finding the best natural light and asking a family to walk together. Sometimes it means giving a small prompt that creates movement or interaction. And sometimes the best thing I can do is simply step back and photograph what is already happening.
Those candid photos are an important part of how I photograph families because I want the final gallery to show more than what everyone looked like.
I want it to remind you of what being together felt like.
More Than a Family Photoshoot
By the end of this maternity session, we had created the photographs we envisioned: natural, colorful, emotional images documenting this family’s season of anticipation.
But what I loved just as much was the experience behind them.
Instead of an afternoon spent worrying about perfect poses, it became a walk through Congress Park, time together as a family, laughter, play, and a memory of this chapter before their family grew once again.
Because the best family photographs do more than document a moment. They bring you back to it.
