This surprise proposal in Albany, NY was especially fun to photograph because the setting was so personal.
The couple chose a quiet meadow with horses nearby, giving the entire session a relaxed, natural feel that was completely different from a typical engagement shoot.

Photographing the Proposal
I arrived ahead of time so I could look at the light, choose the best angles, and make sure I had a good place to photograph the proposal without giving away the surprise.
Once the couple arrived, I stayed out of the way and let the moment unfold naturally.
Some of my favorite images came immediately after the proposal, when the surprise was still sinking in and they were simply enjoying the moment together.
Engagement Photos With Horses
After the proposal, we took some relaxed engagement photos around the meadow with the horses nearby.
This was probably my favorite part of the session visually.
The horses, open landscape, and warm natural light gave the photographs a look that felt very specific to this couple and this location.

A Little Celebration After the “Yes”
There was also a picnic set up with flowers and champagne, which gave us another opportunity to photograph the celebration without making the session feel overly posed.
Those quieter in-between moments ended up being some of my favorites.
From Surprise Proposal to Engagement Session
As the afternoon continued, the proposal naturally became a small engagement session.
We walked through the property, stopped wherever the light looked beautiful, spent some more time around the horses, and created a mix of portraits and candid photographs along the way. I always love when a session has room for both. A little direction when it helps, but also plenty of space for couples to talk, laugh, move around, and interact without feeling like every photograph has to be carefully posed.
I loved how many different parts of the story we were able to capture during this Albany surprise proposal: from the initial reaction to the quiet moments afterward and the engagement portraits in the meadow.
